About Scott Bassett

scott bassett_in gallery-cropped.png

I’ve been a visual being since I was born. The photo used in my studio's logo is actually me taken about age 7 during one of my early ventures into painting.

I’m still semi-active in my own company, Bassett & Brush, which began in my basement in 1985. I’ve been fortunate to have worked on projects for clients such as Disney, National Geographic, Target, Best Buy, and hundreds more.

My passion these days though is to return to the fine arts. Having worked as a graphic designer since the mid-70's, I've also worked as a product photographer and cameraman. Today the subjects of my photographs and drawings are less commercial in nature, and more for the sheer enjoyment...

I hope you enjoy my art...

It all began...

with panoramic photographs. When life finally arrived at that point where I could slow things down, and I decided to truly pursue my photography as fine art, I was enamored with panoramic photographs, because of the challenge they offer.  It's difficult to shoot such wide images and capture all that detail. My first attempt was of Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay NP, Alaska. Tammy and I had cruised into this bay a couple of years earlier. When we arrived off the face of Margerie Glacier I was shocked at how much the glacier had receeded in just a few years. Thinking I needed to preserve this spectacle, I simply zoomed my telephoto lens to its maximum and started shooting the glacier in overlapping segments, thinking I could reassemble them later, which I did in my image editing software. It turned out rather well, considering.

Thinking I was pretty hot stuff, I did another and showed them to my wife, who commented, "They're very nice, Hun, but I wish you'd get back into drawing and painting? I miss that..."

So, I began creating drawings of subjects that were related to my photo prints with the idea of printing these drawings on the matboards to compliment my photographic prints. The drawing and photograph are always related somehow by location, time or history. I've really enjoyed this return to drawing because it has allowed me delve back into my passion as an illustrative artist.

Once again, thinking I'd progressed quite far beyond my humble beginnings, I again shared my work with my wife, as well as a very good friend who is a master woodcrafter.  (I know you can see this coming.) His name is Bob and he encouraged me to create/produce my own mouldings for framing. He's taught me everything I know of woodcrafting.

And so, I've arrived at the point where I now create my handcrafted custom fine art prints from the first kernal of an idea for a photograph to the finished, museum-grade artwork, complete with handcrafted hardwood frames. As you can imagine, this also led to an insatiable need for...

Wood!

Aspen-logs.jpgMany years ago my wife and I planted two Aspen trees in the garden off our patio. A few years later a third aspen volunteered and appeared on the opposite side of the garden. We've thoroughly enjoyed these trees, but last year we decided to have them taken down before the aspen grove took over the entire yard!  A little sad, but I now have three aspen trees worth of wood for moulding. The three aspen are currently drying in my other shed, soon to be moulding...
