Early morning in the Nevada Northern Railway "yard", as Locomotive 40 prepares for the morning run with mail and passenger cars making up the train. The two cars are original from the early 1900's, as is almost all the rolling stock at the Nevada Northern Railway. In the distance on the left you can see the orignal engine house and to the right the coaling tower, bunkhouse and sturtural supports for the water tower - all original buildings!
No. 40 is a 4-6-0 steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and delivered to the Nevada Northern Railroad Company in July 1910. No. 40 originally served as the main locomotive for the railroad's elite passenger train, the "Steptoe Valley Flyer" during the early years when the Nevada Northern Railway was a US Class 2 railroad. In recognition of No. 40’s service and historic prominence she was dubbed the “Prairie Princess” and has been designated as an official state symbol of The State of Nevada. These days, No. 40's most famous role is as the main locomotive for the "Ghost Train of Old Ely" excursion trains which still operate today.

Art Deco Frame: Art Deco was a major artistic style in vogue at the time the Nevada Northern Railway Company was developing, as can be seen in the stylings of the depot builing in East Ely. The drawing printed on the mat board is of my original pencil drawing titled “Throwing the Switch”, which is also Locomotive No. 40 waiting for the fireman to throw the switch, out on what is called the High Line, north of Ely, Nevada, heading towards McGill, Nevada. The Handcrafted Custom, Art Deco frame is Cherry with Black Walnut corner embellishments.
Locomotive Numberplate Frame: Early steam locomotives almost always sported a unique numberplate on the front of the boiler housing, which identified the manufacturer, sometimes the year and the number assigned to that particular locomotive. Not all photographs lend themselves to a round format, but for those that do, frames for my Numberplate Frame Series are an exact replication of the numberplate for the locomtive featured in the photograph, in this case Locomotive No. 40. The frames are carved from either Cherry or Black Walnut, and available in 10", 14", 17" and 24" diameters.

Any print can be combined with a handcrafted, custom hardwood frame with or without a companion mat board.
Pictured are three styles of handcrafted moulding I currently produce, but I'm always open to new ideas and always working on my own new framing concepts.
Art Deco Mahogany: Any species of wood with the rough bark left intact on the sides. I add Art Deco corner devices, and a high-gloss Mahogany finish. A unique contrast between the rough bark and the high-gloss finish for an intriguing presentation.
Art Deco Cherry w/Black Walnut: These frames are made from Cherry, which darkens over time, and uses Art Deco corner devices made of Black Walnut in varying arrangements.
Black Walnut: This Black Walnut moulding is clean, elegant and minimal, setting off the artwork nicely.
Although printed mat boards are one of my trademarks, the mat board may also be clear of imagery and in its pristene condition.
Finally, I use anti-reflective, UV-resistent, museum-quality glass or acrylic to cover and protect my prints.
